Key facts at a glance
- What changed: Amazon Global Logistics (AGL) added two air freight services from China to the US: Air SMP and Economy Air.
- Air SMP: 7–10 calendar days, daily flights from Shanghai and Hong Kong, five US regions, $0 FBA inbound placement service fee.
- Economy Air: 11–15 days from Shanghai or Shenzhen into Los Angeles, priced below standard AGL Air.
- Catch: Rates are not published in the announcement, and the SMP split model can cost more on small shipments.
- Where to book: The AGL program portal in Seller Central.
Amazon Air SMP is now the fastest way to move China-made inventory into all five US fulfillment regions without paying the FBA inbound placement service fee. Amazon confirmed the new service, along with a cheaper Economy Air option, in a Seller Forums announcement as sellers lock in their final Q4 restocks.
I have planned inbound shipments for FBA brands through more than ten peak seasons. The timing of this launch matters as much as the features. Placement fees rose sharply in Amazon’s 2026 FBA fee changes, peak fulfillment fees are already live, and every seller I speak with is hunting for ways to protect margin through November and December.
Here is what Amazon actually announced, what it did not say, and how to decide whether either service fits your inventory plan.
What Is Amazon Air SMP?
Amazon Air SMP (Seller Managed Placement by air) lets you split your inventory at origin in China and fly each portion directly to a locked fulfillment center in each of Amazon’s five US regions. Because you control placement, Amazon waives the FBA inbound placement service fee.
The key details from Amazon’s announcement:
- Transit time: an estimated 7–10 calendar days from origin pickup.
- Origins: daily flights from Shanghai and Hong Kong.
- Destinations: one locked fulfillment center per region, across five US regions, so you know where every carton lands before it leaves.
- Placement fee: $0 for the FBA inbound placement service fee.
- Surcharges: no additional surcharges on apparel, electronics, or lithium battery products.
Two extra details come from EcomCrew’s coverage of the launch. Air SMP requires at least five identical cartons per product per shipment, the same rule ocean SMP uses. EcomCrew also lists live unloading at the fulfillment center and consolidation of shipments heading to the same region. Seller Managed Placement had been limited to ocean freight since July 2025, so this is the first time the model reaches air.
The lithium battery point deserves attention. Battery-powered products usually attract dangerous goods handling charges on air freight. If you sell electronics, that alone can change your carrier comparison.
What Is AGL Economy Air?
AGL Economy Air is the budget option. It moves freight from Shanghai or Shenzhen to Los Angeles in an estimated 11–15 days, at rates Amazon says are lower than standard AGL Air.
It is still air freight, so it beats ocean shipping by weeks. Typical China-to-US ocean transit runs 30–45 days before FBA receiving even starts. EcomCrew reports that Economy Air is already live, while Air SMP is rolling out in early Q4.
Two limits stand out. Economy Air lands only in Los Angeles, so East Coast demand still needs Amazon’s network to move stock across the country. And Amazon’s post attaches the $0 placement fee to Air SMP only. It says nothing about placement fees for Economy Air, so confirm this in the portal before you book.

The Math Amazon Did Not Put in the Headline
A $0 placement fee does not automatically mean a cheaper shipment. This is the part most coverage skips, and it is where experienced sellers will win or lose money.
Amazon’s own Seller Managed Placement FAQ describes SMP as best suited to shipments above 10 CBM. The reason is simple. Splitting one shipment into five regional shipments can mean paying a fixed per-shipment charge five times. Most air shipments are well under 10 CBM, because air is used for smaller, urgent loads.
Use this quick check before booking Air SMP:
Net saving = placement fee you avoid − (extra per-shipment charges from splitting into five)
A hypothetical example shows how it works. Say your normal inbound plan would cost $600 in placement fees. If Air SMP adds a $100 fixed charge on each of the four extra regional shipments, you pay $400 more and save $200 net. If that charge is $180, you lose $120. The real numbers are in the AGL portal, and you should get a written quote before assuming the saving is real.
Run the same test against your current freight forwarder on identical lanes, weights and carton counts. Add any ground transfer cost if you choose Economy Air and most of your buyers are on the East Coast.
Who Should Use Each Service
Choose Air SMP if you sell fast-moving products nationwide, ship at least 10 CBM or close to it, sell apparel, electronics or battery products, and need stock spread across regions before Black Friday.
Choose Economy Air if you need a fast stockout fix at lower cost, your shipment is small, and a few extra days of transit is acceptable. It also suits new product launches where you want early sales data without waiting for an ocean container.
Stay with ocean freight if your Q4 inventory is already planned and in production. Use the air options only to top up best-sellers or recover from a stockout.
Q4 2026 Ship-By Timeline
Black Friday falls on November 27, 2026, and Cyber Monday on November 30. FBA receiving slows down in peak season, so build a buffer of about a week after delivery. These dates are my planning estimates, not Amazon cutoffs.
| Target | Air SMP pickup by | Economy Air pickup by |
| In stock for Black Friday deals (Nov 20) | Around Nov 3 | Around Oct 30 |
| In stock for Cyber Monday (Nov 27) | Around Nov 10 | Around Nov 6 |
| In stock for last-minute holiday orders (Dec 11) | Around Nov 24 | Around Nov 20 |
If you miss these dates, prioritize your top five ASINs by sales velocity and protect them first. For more planning help, read our Amazon Q4 inventory planning guide.
Things to Check Before You Book
- Eligibility: Amazon’s post does not list requirements. AGL generally needs an active FBA account, an AGL account with a payment method, and importer of record details.
- Carton rules: at least five identical cartons per product per shipment for Air SMP.
- Written quote: ask for the full landed cost, including any per-shipment fixed charges.
- Customs and tariffs: duties still apply. See our coverage of US tariffs on China imports for Amazon sellers.
- Data sharing: using AGL gives Amazon more visibility into your supplier and product details. Weigh that if your sourcing is a competitive advantage.
- Inventory limits: check your FBA capacity limits before you ship, so cartons are not stuck waiting for space.
How to Get Started
- Open the AGL program portal from Seller Central.
- New to AGL? The portal walks you through onboarding to your first booking.
- Compare Air SMP and Economy Air rates for your exact lane, weight and carton count.
- Run the net saving check above, then book.
Our Take
Air SMP is a real upgrade. It brings placement control, no battery surcharges and 7–10 day transit into one service, right when sellers need it most. But the $0 placement fee is a headline, not a guarantee of savings. Sellers shipping close to 10 CBM to national buyers will likely benefit. Sellers moving a few small cartons should run the numbers first, and Economy Air may be the smarter choice.
